2 LECTURE
For the first part of this task, we are required to come up with a proposal for a final design revolving a given theme. The general theme is Cultural Sensitivity. We have to study a cultural phenomenon or a particular subculture that is perceived as sensitive.
3 PROPOSAL
My team decided to do a study on the Geisha culture in Japan. We started by doing some research on Google and sketching our first ideas. We will start our field study when we go to Japan on week 4.
4 REFLECTION
Experience
After doing a lot of research on Geisha, I could see that Japanese really respect their culture and would protect and preserve their culture that has been practiced since hundreds of years ago.
Observations
Even though Japan is known to be the most advanced and modern country, they still protect their culture to make sure that the future generations would not forget their roots.
Findings
Geisha is an important part of Japanese culture. Nowadays, there aren't that many geishas in Japan. That is why the Japanese government preserved a geisha village in Kyoto where tourists and locals can come to see real life geishas.
5 FEEDBACKS
My group was told that it would be hard to do a thorough research on our topic as it is sensitive to the Japanese, so we had to change our main topic but can still incorporate Geisha as the design for our new topic.
Our new topic is Navigating Japanese Manners: A Guide to Dos and Don'ts for Cultural Etiquette.
6 FURTHER READING
For this task, I read Geisha, A Life by Mineko Iwasaki. This books tells us about the life of Mineko Iwasaki who is said to be the best Geisha in her generation.
