Task 1 Exploration

1    INSTRUCTION

2    EXPLORATION

Saturday (10/2/2024)

Our first task is to recap the design principles listed below:
  • Gestalt theory
  • Contrast
  • Emphasis
  • Balance
  • Repetition
  • Movement
  • Harmony and unity
  • Symbol
  • Word and image
2.1    Gestalt Theory
Gestalt theory is predicated on the notion that human brain will make an unconscious effort to simplify and arrange complicated visuals or designs by piecing together an ordered system that functions as a whole.

There are six important Gestalt principles:
  • Prägnanz: We naturally perceive things in its simplest form.
  • Similarity: We naturally group things based on what they have in common.

  • Proximity: Objects that are near each other are often grouped together.
  • Continuity: We perceive elements on the same line as a group while the elements on a different line is seen as a different group.
  • Closure: We perceive the elements that form a closed object as a group.
  • Common region: we tend to perceive the things that are in the same area as a group.

2.2    Contrast
Using components that are visually distinct is referred to as contrast. Contrast not only draws the eye of the spectator, but it may also draw attention to a focal point, emphasize crucial information, and give a design variation or even drama.

2.3    Emphasis
Emphasis is used by designers to bring the focus to a specific element. The basics of emphasis can be illustrated in many different ways such as colour differences and weight of the fonts.

2.4    Balance
In design, balance refers to how components are positioned in relation to one another on various sides of a design in order to produce coherence, fulfillment, and satisfaction. You should balance your composition in four different ways: vertically, horizontally, diagonally, or foreground vs background.

2.5    Repetition
Repetition means repeatedly using the same element of design throughout a piece of work. It usually means the artist is more comfortable with sticking to the familiar elements.

2.6    Movement
The way the eye moves over a design is referred to as movement. The most crucial component need to influence the next most crucial one, and so forth. This is accomplished through emphasis, positioning—the eye naturally gravitates toward particular parts of a design first—and other previously discussed design components.

2.7    Harmony and Unity
Unity is aided by harmony in a painting or design. However, monotony might result from having only harmony and no contrast. Striking a balance between areas of harmony and contrast is necessary. Unity refers to how well the elements of a design work together. Unity also helps ensure concepts are being communicated in a clear, cohesive fashion.

2.8    Symbol
Symbols are pictures that we use in design, business, and everyday life to express stories. In the field of design, a symbol is a collection of visual components that can be used to convey a brand's narrative, symbolize its identity, and affect consumers' perceptions of it.

2.9    Word and Image
The twelve basic principles of design consists of words and images. These visual and graphic design principles work together to create appealing and functional designs that make sense to users.

Next, we have to pick and briefly describe one goal from the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal

I am choosing goal number 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation.

The goal is to ensure that clean water and sanitation is available for everyone in the whole world. As of 2020, 2.4 billion people are still unable to get clean water and have to use dirty and unsanitary water which is bad for their health.

Goal 6: Clean Water - Poster

Adobe Illustrator CC 2018

In certain parts of the world, it is very hard to find a clean water source. Clean water should not be a privilege as all creatures big and small all need it to survive. I chose this poster as it shows a little girl using dirty water to clean the dishes. There is also a big bottle of dirty water, presumably belongs to the little girl. It is sad to see that in this age, there are still people who are unable to get clean source of water.

3    REFLECTION

Experience
This week's task is pretty easy, but I am sure there will be more challenges in the upcoming weeks.

Observations
The first three weeks is more of introductions to the principles of design. It is pretty easy to do research online. I just have to search for explanations and examples on Google.

Findings
The UNSDG goals are really eye-opening. I realised that there are a lot of problems in the world that don't have solution yet. Luckily, there are organisations like United Nations that could help these unfortunate people.

4    FEEDBACK

Week 1 feedback
Specific : The first design chosen doesn't have the name of the artist. Choose another design where the information of the design is complete.
General : Add pictures of examples for each of the design principles.

Week 2 feedback
Specific : Just list down the principles that are found in this design. Make sure to write about what you can see in the design.
General : Add pictures for each Gestalt theory.

Week 3 feedback
Specific : Count the words of the description of the design.
General : The examples of each principle is ok. the art chosen is good. Information of the design is complete.

5    FURTHER READING

For this task, I read Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden and Jill Butler. This book is about how to enhance usability, influence perception, increase appeal, make better design decisions and teach through design.
