c)    Shortlist of stop motions

#1    Archie

Archie is a short story based on a picture book by Domenica More Gordon. The puppets were made using needle felting technique. I like how the puppets look like and the storyline is touching. Archie had to travel far after he learned about the death of his beloved Aunt Betty. This stop motion had won the world’s best short films from OSCAR & BAFTA qualifying film festivals.

#2    Bench

Bench is a short film by Rich Webber. The puppets in this stop motion are made with clay. I like how fluid and smooth the movements are. The story started off as cute and innocent, but ending was a bit shocking and unexpected. The characters are adorable. You can see tiny details such as the crumbs falling and the chewing motion.

#3    Cat in the Bag

Click here to watch Cat in the Bag

Cat in the Bag is a stop motion film by Nils Skapāns. The puppets are made of clay. I love the storyline. This short story is about a cat who was thrown away in a bag by its owners and found a little girl who just lost her cat. They both found each other at the lowest point of their lives. The style of the characters are so cute. The background which is made of paper fits the style of the puppets. This short film was nominated to the Golden Slipper Award in the category of Best Animated Film at the Zlín International Film Festival for Children and Youth.

e)    Reflection week 1

Experience :
To be honest, I quite enjoy this class. I already have the basics since I learned it in my previous university, so the first assignment isn't that hard.

Observation :
I learned that we can use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit videos. We can rearrange video clips which is a bit hard when they're not labelled in the right order.

Finding :
Video editing is pretty fun once you get the hang of it. Once I finished my first task, I had fun looking back at what I managed to accomplish.

Dynamic screen direction is the direction that characters and objects move in the scene in relation to the film.

  • The 180 degree rule is a guide for maintaining screen direction throughout a scene. The rule is that an imaginary line called the axis of action is drawn through the middle of a scene, and the camera shoots from one side of this line, never crossing over to the other side.
  • Continuity in cinematography is the notion that a sequence of shot all need to feel as unified and fluid as if they were a single shot.
  • Yes. The camera only stays on one side during the whole video. In the scene where the man and woman were eating the crab, they are placed on the same side of the axis line. In the rest of the scene, everyone else are placed behind the axis line with the camera on the other side.
  • Foreground is the part of the image that is the closest to the camera. Midground is the intermediary layer that connects the foreground and the background. The background is the furthest section from the camera.

  • Depth of field is the distance between the closest and farthest objects in a photo that appears acceptably sharp
  • Deep depth of field is the situation where both the background and foreground are sharp and clear.

e)    Reflection week 2

Experience :
This assignment is harder than the first one. It took me a longer time to finish it. I did enjoy watching the movie though.

Observation :
I noticed that all movies follow the same guidelines. So far, we were told to watch Lalin and Everything Everywhere All At Once and they both have stuff like inciting incident, midpoint and climax.

Finding :
I learned that all movies have to follow the same guidelines to make sure that the story is the best and easily understood by viewers.

Experience :
This week's assignment is definitely the hardest. I have never done anything like this. However, I do enjoy it since I managed to find out that I'm pretty good at this.

Observation :
Sound editing is a very hard task. You have to make sure everything is perfect, or else the video that you are editing won't look good.

Finding :
I found out that we could change the pitch of our voice in Premiere Pro. I used it to make my voice deeper to sound like a man.
