Task 1 - Prop/Asset Design

1    INSTRUCTION

2    LECTURE

Week 01 (22/04/2025) :
We will be using Teams as our main method of studying.
All submissions are done through Teams (not MyTimes).
All info about the assignments can be found in Teams.
Look for any 3D games that you are interested in. Play it, pay close attention to the visual designs and get an idea for your first task.

Week 02 (29/04/2025) :

To do sketches, look for a 3d game. Figure out the artstyle and function (gameplay mechanics).

There are certain rules you have to follow to make sure you stay in the game's world.

Create a moodboard to gather your inspiration and references.

Create sketches and silhouettes for buldings, props and characters.

Week 03 (06/05/2025) :
Do both character and environment (props) at the same time to make sure they can fit in with each other.
Search for 3d game assets for reference.
Look for props that could be used in the environment.
To come up with a concept art, you can use photobashing, speedpaint or traditional art.
To get more clear view of your design, try sculpting it in Zbrush.

Week 04 (13/05/2025) :

3    WEEKLY PROGRESS

Week 02 (29/04/2025)

I gathered a lot of references from my chosen game. I looked at the game's artstyle and the props designs. Then, I got the idea to design a guard armour for the main character. I want to create separate designs for the head, neck and body just like the dress up option in the game. I sketched my first idea for feedback session next week.

Week 03 (06/05/2025) :

I continued designing the armours. I also designed some shields as the prop. However, I added an environment design as a backup plan, just in case my armour idea gets rejected.

Week 04 (13/05/2025) :

Last week, Mr Kannan told me to forget about the character's armour and to focus on the environment. After planning what kind of obstacle course I want, I began 3D modelling it. First I sketched all the obstacles and other props that I would have in my obstacle course. I stuck with the beach theme, so there's a lot of wooden materials and coconut trees.

Week 05 (20/05/2025):

Based on the feedback last week, I made a lot of improvements. I added 3 more obstacles which means the new total is now 6 obstacles. I haven't made it in 3D yet because I wanted to finalize the designs first.

Week 6 (27/05/2025) :

I changed some of the objects' designs to make it have more variations and connect it more to the environment.

Week 7 (03/06/2025) :

I looked for a lot of references related to my theme which is beach obstacle course. I changed some designs to fit the theme like wooden wall, coconut husks and boat paddles.

4    FINAL SUBMISSION

5    FEEDBACK

Week 02 (29/04/2025) :
Focus on the environment.
Create an "arena" like environment like a treehouse or a town hall.
Can create a new character or upgrades for existing characters.

Week 03 (06/05/2025) :
The idea is good.
Try to look for any props that would fit in with the theme, for example a shield.
Play around with various armour designs from different eras.

Week 04 (13/05/2025) :
Focus only on the environment.
Draw from the character's viewing angle.
Create a simple layout of the environment in 3D software.
Start with a simple barrel.
Proceed further if possible.

Week 05 (20/05/2025) :
Instead of adding random stuff, use the whole space as an obstacle course.
Take inspiration from theme parks and the ninja warrior kind of games.
After that, add a character to show how the character interacts with the props.

Week 6 (27/05/2025) :
Some designs are too simple.
The wooden tunnel can be replaced with a whole log.
The tree poles are too straight. Make it curved a bit, but not too much.
Add more variations to each of the items.
Can add colour before final submission.

Week 7 (03/06/2025) :
The base is good, but not enough.
Need to conceptualize it first.

Week 8 (10/06/2025) :
All base are good.
Some can proceed to 3D modelling.
Add more variations to the designs. At least 3 different designs for each object.
