Task 2 Visual Analysis

1    INSTRUCTION

2    TASK 2 RECAP

This task requires us to assess, investigate, document and analyse the existing art/design that we chose in Task 1. We will study the design principles found in that work,  as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that we have chosen.

3    LECTURE

Wednesday (21/02/2024)

Visual analysis is understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles. It is important as it allows people to read and interpret images.

Visual analysis can include three phases:
  • Phase 1: Observation (closely looking at the design and identify the visual elements and principles in it).
  • Phase 2: Analysis (think about your observation and make statements about the work)
  • Phase 3: Interpretation (identify the meaning of the design and the purpose it was created).

4    VISUAL ANALYSIS

We are required to make a visual analysis based on the art that we chose in Task 1. The art chosen must be related  to one of the UNSDG goals.

I am choosing goal number 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation.

Goal 6: Clean Water -Poster

4.1    Observation

The background shows a dry and dirty land. There is a little girl washing her dishes with dirty water that flows out of an old water pipe. There is also a big bottle that contains dirty water. The girl looks very messy and dirty. The water used by the little girl is unsanitary and not safe for the girl. The monochrome colour used for the girl stands out against the contrast blue and yellow background. The main sentence in the background is made using a big bold font. The white colour also stands out from the art and the background.

4.2    Analysis

This poster uses a contrast blue and yellow gradient for the background. The combination of two primary colours produce a successful design. Blue and yellow are also complementary colours which creates a perfect aesthetic balance for the viewers.

Next, the little girl is emphasized using black and white colour. This shows that the little girl is the focal point of this poster. The little girl stands out from the rest of the things in the background as the black and white colour is an eye-catching element.

Other than that, harmony and unity is shown through the combination of the colours.  The colours chosen for the background which is blue and yellow shows balance which is important. The elements in this poster works well together and creates a perfect balance.

Lastly, word and image is also included in this design. The biggest and boldest words in this poster is taken from statistics recorded in 2020. The small words at the lowerpart of the poster  creates awareness among the viewers.

4.3    Interpretation

These posters were created using the pictures of nature and living things. I find that these posters share some similarities with the original art that I chose. The first poster has words written on it while the second poster mostly relies on images. These posters were created to create awareness among people about the bad effects of human waste to nature and the good effects that nature has in us.

5    REFLECTION

5.1    Experience
I realised that I should have read the instructions properly. I have to fix the observation and interpretation before the end of this week.

5.2    Observations
The task is pretty simple and straightforward. The hardest part would be the interpretation as it requires you to do a lot of research about the artist that you chose.

5.3    Findings
Elements and principles of design can be found in various arts throughout history. We can see it in old and modern art.

6    FEEDBACK

Week 3 feedback
Specific : Add the lecture.
General : Write the name elements when describing them so that it's easier to identify which elements are identified in this design.

Week 4 feedback
Specific :  None (absent due to trip to Japan)
General : None (absent due to trip to Japan)

Week 5 feedback
Specific : For observation, write about what can be seen in the design. Describe the objects, colour and elements in the design.
General : Add reflection and further reading at the end of the blog.

7    FURTHER READING

For this task, I read Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden and Jill Butler. This book is about how to enhance usability, influence perception, increase appeal, make better design decisions and teach through design.
