2    TASK 2 RECAP

Based on the design that we chose in Task 2, we have to create a new work. We must apply our knowledge of design principles in our creation. We are allowed to use any medium for this task.

2.1    Visual Reference

Since I chose Goal 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation, my design would have to relate to water and sanitation. I started by looking for any poster references on Google.

2.11    Visual reference 1

This design shows the whole world by adding the Earth. Almost half of the Earth doesn't have water, this is explained by the fact that only almost half of the Earth can be seen filled with water. Meanwhile, the hand that is twisting the tap represents the people from all over the world who could help those who don't get clean water.

2.12    Visual reference 2

This design shows balance between the left and right sections. It is divided into two sections to show the vast difference between a flourishing land and a dry, polluted and dirty land. The emphasized part in this design is the hand holding the ball of water. The hand represents the power that some people in the world have over the source of water.

2.13    Visual reference 3

This design emphasizes on the red objects which are the water pipe, the buildings on the pipe and the big hand. The hand on top is twisting the pipe. This shows how the people with power could control how much water is distributed to the people in need. Then, the blue people on the bottom are the people in need. who could only get a little bit of water everyday.

2.2    Sketches

Next, I started sketching my ideas. I wanted to make a poster that creates awareness among people about the importance of clean water and sanitation.

2.21    Sketch 1

The hand represents people from all over the world who has to power to help provide water to unfortunate people who do not have access to clean water.

The water is emphasized as it stands out against the dark background. The colours chosen for the water and background are also contrast to each other. Movement can also be seen in the water that's flowing from the hands to the Earth. There is a text at the bottom of the page.

Sketch 1

2.22    Sketch 2

This design shows that right now, there are people who are living the opposite lives from us. We can see that the girl on top lives a very lucky and privileged life where she has enough water to drink and is able to play and waste water. The trees and animals behind her are also flourishing. However, the girl at the bottom is living in a dry land where water is very hard to obtain. She is much skinnier and messier than the girl on the top. The trees and animals behind her are dull and cannot survive the dry weather.

We can see the balance in this design. The elements in this design is also repeated twice, but in different forms. They are the exact opposite of each other.

Sketch 2

2.23    Sketch 3

The third sketch shows a hand which represents the upper class people or rulers controlling the amount of water that is given to the people in need. This action should be stopped as water is a necessity in our life. It should be shared equally all over the world.

We can see the emphasis in the big hand and the bright red colour. The red colour of the sleeve and the text also contrasts against the light blue background. There are also words and images in this design.

3    DRAWING PROCESS

For this task, I drew on a sketchbook and transferred the scanned picture to my tablet. Then, I coloured it on Ibis Paint.

4    FINAL

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jyPzqjWJQBSzRM_hXKba6SvRCf_QWdI5/preview

I chose UNSDG goal 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation.

This design shows two people living different lives. The girl on top lives a very privileged life. She gets enough clean water to drink and could waste water. However, the girl below lives in poverty and does not have any clean water for daily use. In the background, we can see two different environments. One shows a very green and flourishing environment while the other is a dried land.

The purpose of this design is to show that there are two sides of the world. While we might be living in a safe place with enough water source, some people are unlucky enough to live in a place where clean water is so difficult to find.

The first design principle is contrast which can be seen clearly in two halves of the design. The top half used a lot of blue and green which contrasts against the brown theme of the bottom half. Next, there's balance which is shown vertically. The two halves look like reflection of each other. Finally, there is movement which can be seen in the border that separates two parts of the design.

5    REFLECTION

Experience
This week's task is even harder than the previous tasks. This time, I have to do more research in order to come up with the perfect design related to my chosen UNSDG goal. However, I enjoyed this task as it is a challenge for me to step out of my comfort zone because it requires me to draw background which is my weakness.

Observations
After making three designs, I realised that the designs that were inspired by the posters I found on the Internet is not really special. My second sketch that I did all on my own was approved instead which makes me more confident in my designing skill.

Findings
In the end, this task has managed to make me realise that I have been taking my life for granted. I should learn to save water because not everyone is blessed with enough and sanitised water for their daily life.

6    FEEDBACK

Week 6 feedback
Specific : The drawing looks flat because it's just a sketch. Make sure to add more details, texture and depth to the final design.
General : The first design is nice, but other students might have the same idea since it's too common. The second design is much more unique.

Week 7 feedback
Specific : Explain each of the design principles in detail because the current one is too general.
General : All good. No comment.

7    FURTHER READING

For this task, I read Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden and Jill Butler. This book is about how to enhance usability, influence perception, increase appeal, make better design decisions and teach through design.
